For students who qualify, Exceptional Student Services (ESS) Transportation provides safe and reliable transportation based on the individual needs outlined in a student's IEP.
Our ESS and Transportation teams work together with families to ensure each student's transportation plan supports safety, accessibility, consistency, and a successful school day. This page provides families with important information about ESS transportation, including expectations and contact information when assistance is needed.
NUSD offers two types of ESS transportation services: designated bus stops and curb-to-curb pick-up and drop-off. The type of transportation provided is determined by each student's individual needs and required supports.
These services may be provided for students with medical needs, physical limitations, safety concerns, or other disability-related needs that require additional transportation support.
These services are determined by an IEP team. If you feel that your student should be receiving transportation services through ESS, contact your child's case manager to schedule an IEP meeting.
Students are expected to:
Follow the bus driver's directions the first time they are given.
Remain properly seated while the bus is in motion.
Keep hands, feet, belongings, and other objects inside the bus.
Keep aisles and emergency exits clear.
Use a quiet, conversational voice and appropriate language.
Treat the driver and other passengers with respect.
Keep hands, feet, and objects to themselves.
Help maintain a clean and safe bus environment.
Follow all District and school behavior expectations while riding the bus.
For the safety of all passengers, students should not bring items onto the bus that may create a safety hazard or interfere with seating or aisles. This may include glass containers, animals, skateboards, oversized objects, or other prohibited items.
