Where Does the Code of Conduct Apply?

Student expectations extend beyond the classroom.

The District's discipline guidelines apply to student conduct:

During the school day
On school grounds
At bus stops
While boarding, riding, or exiting District transportation
While traveling to and from school
At school-sponsored activities and events

Students are expected to follow District and school expectations whenever they are participating in or connected to a school activity.

Speak Up. We Want to Help.

Students who believe they are being bullied—or who are concerned that another student may be experiencing bullying—should report the concern to any District staff member.

Reports will be handled with appropriate confidentiality.

Retaliation against someone for reporting suspected bullying is prohibited.

Reports should be made to the site principal

Technology & Digital Citizenship

Technology provides powerful opportunities for students to learn, communicate, collaborate, and create. With that access comes responsibility.

Use of NUSD computers, networks, telecommunications, and other technology resources is a privilege. Students are expected to:

Use District technology for appropriate educational purposes.
Protect their accounts and personal information.
Follow copyright and intellectual property requirements.
Use appropriate and respectful digital communication.
Protect the privacy of others.
Log out of District devices when finished.
Follow staff directions regarding devices and technology.
Never use technology to threaten, harass, bully, or distribute inappropriate or illegal content.
Obtain permission before recording students, staff members, or classroom instruction.

Students and families should review the Student Use of Technology Agreement for complete expectations regarding District technology, wireless communication devices, and artificial intelligence.

Searches & School Safety

Maintaining a safe school environment sometimes requires school administrators to investigate potential safety concerns.

District administration has authority to search and seize property when there is reason to believe that material or items detrimental to student health, safety, or welfare may be present.

District-provided storage spaces and property remain under District control and supervision. Different requirements may apply to searches involving personal electronic devices and vehicles.

Families should review the complete Student Code of Conduct for detailed information regarding searches and student property.

Safe Schools. Respectful Communities. Responsible Leaders.

At Nadaburg Unified School District, we believe every student deserves to learn in a safe, positive, caring, and respectful environment.

Our Student Code of Conduct establishes expectations that protect each student's opportunity to learn, support the health and safety of students and staff, protect school property, and ensure that members of our school community are treated with courtesy and respect.

We believe student behavior is about more than following rules. It is also an opportunity to develop responsibility, leadership, good judgment, and respect for others.

Leadership Starts With Our Choices

As a Leader in Me district, we encourage students to recognize that leadership begins with the choices they make each day.

Be Proactive
Take responsibility for your actions and choices.

Think Win-Win
Consider how your choices affect both yourself and others.

Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Listen, communicate respectfully, and work to understand different perspectives.

Synergize
Work together to solve problems and make our school community stronger.

Every student has the ability to lead, contribute, learn from mistakes, and make choices that positively impact others.

Our Expectations for Students

Students are expected to make choices that contribute to a safe and productive learning environment.

Across our schools, students are expected to:

  • Be Safe — Make choices that protect your safety and the safety of others.
  • Be Respectful — Treat students, staff, visitors, and property with courtesy and respect.
  • Be Responsible — Take ownership of your actions, learning, and choices.
  • Be Ready to Learn — Participate in learning and avoid behavior that disrupts the learning of others.
  • Follow Directions — Follow reasonable directions provided by teachers, administrators, bus drivers, and other District staff.
  • Care for Our Schools — Respect District facilities, technology, equipment, and the belongings of others.
  • Use Technology Responsibly — Use District technology, networks, and digital resources safely and for appropriate educational purposes.
  • Solve Problems Appropriately — Seek help from a trusted adult when conflicts, safety concerns, or other problems arise.

Bullying, Harassment & Intimidation
Everyone Deserves to Feel Safe at School

Nadaburg Unified School District is committed to providing students with a positive, safe, caring, and respectful learning environment.

Bullying in any form is not tolerated.

Bullying and harassment may be verbal, written, physical, emotional, social, or electronic. This includes cyberbullying and behavior through social media or other electronic communication when the behavior falls within the scope of District policy.

Maintaining Safe Schools

Certain behaviors can significantly interfere with the safety, rights, or learning of others and may result in disciplinary action.

These may include, but are not limited to:

Fighting, physical aggression, or threats of harm
Bullying, cyberbullying, harassment, intimidation, or hazing
Disrupting teaching, learning, or school operations
Damaging or threatening to damage school or personal property
Possessing or using prohibited or dangerous items
Possessing, using, distributing, or selling prohibited substances
Refusing to follow reasonable directions from District staff
Misusing technology, electronic devices, or District networks
Engaging in conduct that creates an unsafe or substantially disruptive school environment

The complete NUSD Parent/Student Handbook contains specific definitions, expectations, procedures, and disciplinary guidelines.

Responding to Student Behavior

Our goal is to maintain a safe learning environment while helping students recognize the impact of their choices and make better decisions moving forward.

Depending on the behavior and circumstances, responses may include:

Conversation and redirection
Student conference
Parent/guardian communication or conference
Development of a plan for improved behavior
Restriction of privileges
Detention or other school-based interventions
Removal from a classroom in certain circumstances
In-school or out-of-school suspension
Alternative placement
Expulsion or other disciplinary action when warranted

Disciplinary responses are not necessarily identical in every situation. School administration may consider the circumstances of the incident, the student's history, the seriousness of the behavior, applicable law and policy, and the best interests of the student and school community when determining an appropriate response.

Student Due Process

Students referred for disciplinary action have due process rights.

Students have the right to:

Be informed of the accusations against them.
Admit or deny the accusations.
Hear the evidence upon which the accusations are based.
Have an opportunity to provide their account of what occurred.

Additional procedures and rights may apply depending on the disciplinary action being considered.

Students & Families Are Partners

Creating safe and successful schools takes all of us.

We encourage families to:

Review behavior expectations with their student.
Maintain open communication with teachers and school administration.
Contact the school when concerns arise.
Encourage students to seek help from trusted adults.
Support students in taking responsibility for their choices.
Review the Parent/Student Handbook each school year.

When schools, students, and families work together, we create an environment where every student has the opportunity to learn and thrive.
